A little info on what works and doesn’t work for me.

2 Week Clean Eating Challange

I tried out this 2 week Clean Eating Challange on Buzzfeed and loved it. The meals were yummy, I was never hungry and my energy and motivation picked up. Shedding a few pounds, that snuck on with long days at work, was an added bonus. Definitly a good one to get you back on track.

Clean Eating

The meal plan was disigned for spring/summer, so there’s a lot of salads in there. I’ll be creating my own plan this week for more heartier, comfy recipes to warm the cockles.

I was’t the most strict on myself but I’ve learned a little more about portion control and I’m off the coffee again – yaaay!

Yes prep and effort is involved but it’s all there in the plan, it couldn’t be easier. Give it a go, you’ll feel awesome especially in the run up to the biggest eating event of the year. Christmas that is.

Now to keep it up.

Iron – Get it into you.

I’ve had an issue or two with Iron. I’m not going to give you some facts or statistics because I would probably get them wrong. All I know is that it’s good to have a bit of Iron in the body. If you have that then your grand.

My biggest drop in Iron was when I was training for my first marathon. I was losing iron daily for a long period of time  and I didn’t even realise. Here’s a few reasons why:

  • Pounding the pavements and trails damaged red blood cells in the feet.
  • Loss of Iron in sweat.
  • Not eating red meat or meat in general.
  • Being a woman.

It wasn’t until I became very ill that I reaised my iron levels were very low. I was tired all of the time. Felt nauseaus and couldn’t eat. Was very dizzy and weak.

Trying to be healthy could be the death of me.  Lesson Learned. It took weeks to feel a little more normal and a few months to be right again.I didn’t do a great job of the marathon but I finished.

I couldn’t figure out why I felt so wonderful after a big beef burger and a couple of pints of the black stuff. (Guiness) I now take supplements as I still don’t eat a lot of meat. Meat is one of the best ways to get iron into you but here’s some more great tips for non meat eaters:

Say Hello to my Green Friend

Green smoothieOver a year ago I got a gift of a juicer – my first thought was why on earth  did I get one of these, I wanted a blender.  (sorry gift giver) My tune changed pretty quick. I’ve used that juicer at least 4 times a week since. Can’t imagine my life without it now.

Rarely I will make a really yummy juice with watermelon, blood orange etc etc. Mostly I take all of the veggies from my fridge that I think are pretty healthy and green and I whack them in. I have juice books that have some great tasty recipes but I’m too lazy for that and I want to maximize all that green goodness.

Green juiceI love the summer and the amount of great veggies it has to offer. Pity winter lasts so long where I live.  I juice kale, chard, lettuce, spinach, water cress (ugh extra gross) cilantro, parsley, peppers, carrots, apple, ginger, lime I could keep going. I don’t mix all of these together but whatever’s going. You can even use the stalks, like the stalks from broccoli. I’m at the stage where I think this blend tastes good. Others disagree. Maybe I’ve killed my taste buds. Either way I feel unreal after drinking it. I get such a kick from it, not as strong as a shot of coffee might give but close enough.

When I need something a little more filling I’ll make a green smoothie. I usually use coconut water as a base, lettuce/spinach, broccoli, lime again whatever surprise jumps out at me from the fridge. Depending on what I put in, the texture from the smoothie is usually thick and sometimes chewy. I’ve stopped putting kale in there as that just has a nasty texture. I was so good having one of these for breakfast everyday, this was short lived (for like two days haha) as I just started downing them in order to get them in me. Maybe I need to work on the recipe but for now I feel amazing after drinking them so they’re staying. Maybe just not for breakfast. When I’m on a green buzz I have so much more energy and my skin looks clear and fresh .

I would add a recipe but I think this is one  you need to figure out what you like and what makes you gag.
Or just google it.

Coffee – Why don’t you love me?

Have you ever been in a situation where you are infatuated by someone. You see them everyday and you can’t handle being without them. Maybe a work friend. All morning you can’t concentrate, you’re thinking about them, waiting for them to arrive just so you can see them. And when they do arrive well . . . the world changes. They smell irresistible, being around them makes you feel so good. Giddy even. And then they look at you with those come to bed eyes, (even though you’re probably just imagining it) that look that melts your heart. They’ve got you hooked.

But devastatingly you realize over time, you don’t even have to ask – you know it – they do not love you back.

This is how I feel about coffee.

I work at an amazing bakery called Purebread in Whistler, Canada. And we do the best coffee around. A customer said it was the best in North America, I’m not going to argue with that. We use Stumptown. Roasted in Portland and Seattle. I could give you some pretentious coffee descriptions but all you need to know is that It is bloody good stuff!Coffee3

Another great love of mine is Red Rooster Coffee. Roasted in Galway and sold throughout Ireland. If you haven’t had it yet and you think you’re a coffee lover then get up and get some!Red rooster coffee

I love coffee, some people say that I don’t really love the taste I’m just addicted. Well I’ll tell you now, yes I’m addicted but that doesn’t change the fact that I Loooove coffee! I’m a one coffee a day kind of gal. Sometimes. When I’m having a long day, or a tiring day, or a great day, or a day where I’m eating a lot of cake and I just want more, then I become a two or three coffees a day kind of gal. It doesn’t take much to persuade me. Working in a bakery means that I’m standing beside ovens most of the day, sweating buckets. And then I go to a hot yoga class and I fill some more buckets. I drink a lot of water. Depending on the day anywhere from 3 – 6 liters a day. You would think that I should be good right? Wrong – very wrong.

Hot Coffee

Even just one cup of coffee can start me off to a very thirsty day. My skin then becomes unbelievable dry. Like wake up in the middle of the night scratching, it’s that dry. It’s not news to me that tea and coffee are diuretics. But this is a little far.

However, what was news to me is that the tannins in tea and coffee and wine can inhibit the absorption of vitamins and minerals into the body. A few months back I was struggling with iron levels and a Naturopath advised to get rid of tea and coffee out of my life. It’s getting in the way.

This random man that doesn’t even know me tells me I can’t be with the one I love. Well he can go get . . . ok maybe he knows a thing or two.

ImageGiving coffee up is rough. Luckily I don’t drink wine with my breakfast every morning. Every time I give it up I get headaches, nausea, I am a walking anti-christ. Life just becomes difficult. It took 2 weeks to get over these symptoms. By week three I thought I was in the clear so I should celebrate with a coffee. Dumbass!

In saying all of that when I’m not drinking coffee I feel wonderful. I don’t have highs and lows. I have more energy and I am a lot more hydrated. I can start absorbing vits and mins again. My mood is better also. I’m a lot more tolerable at every point in the day. Despite my love for the stuff feeling awesome trumps every time.

Right now I’m on day three of giving it up again. And it’s going ok.
